The breath of life

From Andrew:

In the last two weeks, Nancy's breathing has become progressively more difficult. A week ago, we required oxygen at home, and as the week wore on, she needed it more and more constantly. On Sunday, Nancy was in real difficulty, struggling for breath and experiencing acute anxiety/panic attacks when she became short of breath - that feeling of being underwater, and the surface is too far. You may know that she suffered from asthma as a child, in the days before puffers, so the terror is compounded by old memories.

On Monday morning, it was clear that we could not remain at home, as Nancy was in serious difficulty, and an ambulance trip to St Paul's hospital was quickly arranged. Scans and x-rays were performed, and the diagnosis was that taking a steroid to reduce the inflammation in her lungs and pleura would help, along with draining fluid that had accumulated in her chest cavity. That procedure was done this afternoon, and it has made a tremendous difference, "a new lease on life" says Nancy. Her breathing is much eased and free-er, she feels relieved, and looks a whole lot better too! We are all taking deep breaths of great gratitude and relief, and smiling with new hope. The photo was taken this afternoon after the procedure.

It is not impossible for her to still make it to Brazil on Sunday, but that seems quite unlikely at this point. We will see. In the meantime, she is delighted to be benefitting from the ministrations of a remarkable physiotherapist named Kristen Rose Duncan, who works with energy in effective and healing ways. Three more treatments on the way!

Nancy's pain is also now very well managed, using hydromorphone. A fantastic difference to no longer have pain be in the way. So now that pain and breathing are both improved, we hope that more mobility will return, as walking had become more or less impossible in the last week or so.

For now, Nancy remains in palliative care at St Paul's, likely for another couple of days, and then hopefully back home if we can arrange for suitable oxygen.

Nancy sends her love to you, and her heartfelt thanks for your intentions and prayers, which are surely helping. Keep 'em coming, please!

I am now off to secure a tasty dinner, as the food offered at the hospital is pretty much what you'd expect.

From me, an outpouring of thanks to all the heavenly and earthly Angels who are assisting in making this journey be one that is trimmed with love, support, practical help, and emotional and spiritual sustenance. With great love to you.

Dropped in to your house this afternoon and met your lovely friends from Oregon.....when I saw the vehicle parked in front it was quite sure it was Tracy!! In any case, snipped some of your rosemary which is so bounteous. xoxoxox Sharon

  4. How can anyone look so beautiful laying in a hospital bed? I guess it is a reflection of your inner self. Without your struggles you wouldn't have stumbled across your extraordinary strength. The three of you have resided in our heart since January as we pray daily for your courage and strength and continuous progress.....praying for a miracle...and it will come! Lots of love and hugs from the Koll family in the Bahamas.

  6. Hi Nancy and Andrew and Gemma -
Nancy, you do look light and beautiful and happy in your bed. I wanted you to know that for the year 2006 I worked as a Staff Support Counsellor on the Palliative Care Unit at St. Pauls. I have never met a staff of more magnificent human beings. There are very special people drawn to that unit. If ever a miracle could happen, it could happen there. I saw many!!! Just in your being Nancy, you are one of them. I love you guys and send blessings. An endless waterfall of them........ Marcia Jacobs

  7. I would like to share with you something my mother wrote to me on August 13. 1983. She gave me this little note while I was visiting her in St-Georges. I kept it and often say this prayer which I find uplifting:
" Je crie sans cesse vers toi Seigneur. Tu es mon Guide et mon Ami! Je te demande de toujours garder mes lampes allumees et celles des miens afin que notre vie qui a des deserts, des nuits, des orages et des tempetes ne nous empeche pas de Te voir dans tous les evenements de nos vies! Nous nous abandonnons a toi Seigneur car sans Toi nous ne pouvons rien. Andrew, I pray that this prayer written by your grandmother sustain you and your family.

We know that you are all coming to terms with your own fears. We have a deep reverence and respect for all you and your family are going through. Peter and Louise xoxo

  8. So Nancy I see you bathed in healing love like being stroked by a silken hand with touch as light as a humming birds feather caressing you on the inside stroking the inside of your lungs and as each stroke passes it leaves a film of nourishing cellular food, healing your lungs and allowing you to breathe easily again. Feel it bubbling in your chest as your tissues are nourished.
I see your blood becoming quickened by this healing love bathing you and it gathers the nutrients that your lungs need to heal themselves so that it streams through your veins and all through the miles of veins in your lungs carrying and depositing nutrient while gathering oxygen and carrying that back into your body.
I see you breathing deeply, as you can, easily and comfortably, not worrying about the future, paying attention to the moment, being present with the moment. There is no cause for fear, all things are good and happening in their own time. We can trust life even when its telling us to go this way but we want to go the other way. Don’t fight the current. BE watchful, trust the current, use your timing and guide the direction of your perception in small ways. Hold faith and trust, your journey is unique to you and only you can take the journey. The rest of us are companion mirrors along your path here to reflect the love right back to you and shine lights along the way to help your see your way.
When you are well enough, or not, I want to come and read you a story, a poignant story about transformation. It’s a teaching story from the Cheyenne tradition called Jumping Mouse and when you are ready let me know when I can come.

    Lester
